The greenman has been found in many cultures around the world. The greenman is related to natural vegetative deities. Often interpreted as a symbol of rebirth and representing the cycle of growth each spring. The Oak King and the Holly King are often portrayed as a greenman. Each year we celebrate the coming and going of the Oak king and de Holly King. The Oak king representing growth and the seasons of spring and summer. The Holly King representing the time of autumn and winter. He reminds us that death is important. We need time to let go , a time to rest and go inwards. The two brothers are battling each other during the year for the love and mating with the Great Mother Earth Goddess. At midsummer and midwinter the battle between the two are reaching to a climax. The Oak king wins the battle at midwinter and lies in her arms, dies and is resurrected at Beltane while the Holly King wins the battle at midsummer and lies in the arms of the Great Mother, dies and is resurrected at Lammas. The winner will rule for half the year while the other is nursing his wounds until he finds strength to battle again. Although they are enemies, they are together as whole. One can not exist without the other.
This art piece is a greenman inspired by the Oak King. At Yule , 21th of December, we celebrate the return of the Oak King and the promise of spring and growth, the awakening of the Mother.
